Proofread Excelsior LLC

Your destination for quality proofreading

Need a proofreader? Look no further.

I'm Scott. I founded Proofread Excelsior in 2018 with the goal of providing high-quality proofreading services for book authors. Let me give your work the final level of polish it deserves. With an English degree and very reasonable rates, I'll make your project fit for publishing.

Just what is proofreading? I believe the Society for Editors and Proofreaders has a darn good explanation (https://www.sfep.org.uk/about/faqs/what-is-proofreading/):

After material has been copy-edited, the publisher sends it to a designer or typesetter. Their work is then displayed or printed, and that is the proof – proof that it is ready for publication. Proofreading is the quality check and tidy-up. However, some clients expect more than that.

Many proofreaders find they spot more errors on paper than on screen, but proofs may be read and marked in either medium. Proofreading is now often 'blind' – the proof is read on its own merits, without seeing the edited version.

A proofreader looks for consistency in usage and presentation, and accuracy in text, images and layout, but cannot be responsible for the author's or copy-editor's work. The proofreader's terms of reference should be agreed before work starts.

As a self-published novelist, I've had to proofread my own work many times. I also run a blog with 500+ entries and counting, and I had to proofread each one. You can see my work for yourself at www.thegamecalledrevolution.blogspot.com

I graduated from Oklahoma Christian University in August 2006 with a BA in Arts. My major was English/Writing with a minor in Bible. I know my way around a preposition.

As an indie author, I appreciate the need to do proper proofreading. A lot of indie novels out there suffer from a lack of editing which can kill that all-important first impression.

No judgment here, only help. No matter how many mistakes you make, even Hemingway said, "The first draft of anything is always ****." If even the Big H couldn't get it right on the first try, there is hope for all of us. You can rest easy knowing the work you put your heart and soul into is in good hands.

Areas of Practice

I specialize in literary works. I'm currently not open to transcript proofreading or anything requiring a high knowledge of medical terminology.

You’d think that the ability to write lucid prose would be the bottom line for any publishing novelist, but it is not so... You would expect that proofreaders and copy editors would pick this sort of stuff up even if the writers of such embarrassing English do not, but many of them seem as illiterate as the writers they are trying to bail out.
